The American Council on Exercise (ACE) publishes widely referenced body fat ranges that break down into four categories for men and women:
For women

- Acceptable: 25–31%
- Obese: 32% and above
For men
- Essential fat: 2–5%

How body fat percentage is measured

DEXA scan (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry)
The gold standard. A DEXA scan uses low-level X-rays to differentiate between fat tissue, lean tissue, and bone. - Men: % body fat = 86.010 × log₁₀(waist − neck) − 70.041 × log₁₀(height) + 36.76
- Women: % body fat = 163.205 × log₁₀(waist + hip − neck) − 97.684 × log₁₀(height) − 78.387

Body fat percentage vs. BMI: which one matters more?
Body Mass Index (BMI) is calculated from weight and height alone — it has no information about whether your weight comes from fat or muscle. This creates well-known limitations.
