How Long Does It Take to Pay Off Student Loans?
Automated technical check: . Scope and review policy
Student-loan payoff depends on the balance, rate, payment schedule and loan program. A fixed-payment projection answers a different question from eligibility for a federal repayment or forgiveness plan. Our Loan Payoff Calculator estimates the former; it does not choose a federal plan.
A fixed-payment example, not a federal plan quote
For a $30,000 balance at an illustrative 6.5% annual rate, assume no new borrowing, fees, payment pauses or rate changes. Interest is modeled monthly and each payment first covers that month's interest. The final payment is smaller when necessary.
| Fixed payment | Months to payoff | Total interest |
|---|---|---|
| $341.00 | 120 | $10,860.04 |
| $450.00 | 83 | $7,321.30 |
| $600.00 | 59 | $5,081.86 |
The $450 scenario takes 83 months. Do not interpret 6.5% as today's federal rate or the $341 row as a guaranteed government repayment quote. Enter the rate and balance on your own statement.
Federal plans changed in 2026
Checked October 6, 2026: Federal Student Aid says the SAVE plan ended and is no longer available. Repayment Assistance Plan (RAP) and Tiered Standard options are part of the current framework; eligibility depends on loan type and disbursement dates. There is no universal promise that every borrower has the same 10-year default or a 20-25-year income-driven horizon.
Use Federal Student Aid's current repayment-plan comparison and its official repayment calculator, then confirm the chosen option with your servicer. Income-based payments, interest benefits, qualifying-payment counts and forgiveness cannot be modeled by simply entering a fixed monthly amount here.
Why the servicer's number can differ
Federal student loans generally use daily interest. The number of days between payments, accrued unpaid interest, capitalization rules and payment allocation can affect the result. This tool uses rate / 12, not an actual daily-interest ledger. It excludes subsidies, forgiveness, income changes and recertification.
Do not assume every extra dollar bypasses accrued interest. Confirm allocation and paid-ahead handling with your servicer. A private refinance can remove federal protections; a lower rate alone is not a complete comparison.
Compare an extra payment carefully
Loan Payoff compares your entered payment without extras against that same payment with extras or an up-front lump sum. If payments cannot reduce the balance, or payoff is beyond the 50-year calculation limit, the result is marked as not paid off rather than given a false payoff date.
For an ordinary fixed-payment illustration, see how extra payments change payoff. That illustration does not establish whether accelerating payments is better than using federal benefits or maintaining emergency savings.
